Editorial: Window On The World

Our whole school topic for Term two was Window on the World. The children set off on exciting adventures to explore different countries, cultures and phenomena. This topic also allowed them to explore literary traditions of different countries or stories set within that location.

Amazed by the natural wonders of the Aurora Borealis, the Year Six children completed some powerful descriptive writing and then tried their hand at persuasive writing to encourage people to visit Denmark. Have they succeeded in their mission?

Also exploring Scandinavia, Year Five came face to face with the gruesome monsters that Beowulf and the Geats had to battle against. The children read the story, adapted by Kevin Crossley-Holland, and predicted their own endings. Linked to this, they designed and created their own raised images of one of Beowulf’s gruesome foes!

Visiting modern day Greece, Year Three explored the current and sensitive issue of refugees. They read a book called ‘There’s A Boy Just Like Me’ which explores the similarities and differences between a boy in the UK and a refugee. The children were amazed to find out that this book was written by Frasier Cox when he was just nine years old! The text clearly had a significant impact upon them as the writing produced was very thoughtful and emotive.
