Refugee Letter

The children imagined they were refugees and wrote letters to someone they left behind telling them about their experience escaping their home country and what it was like in the refugee camp.

Moria Camp, Lesbos, Greece
Monday 22nd October 2018

Dear Granny and Grandad.

I hope you are safe and together. The night we split was terrible. I was hysterical for hours after we separated. I was heartbroken when I looked behind me and you could not catch up and I knew I had lost you. I was petrified and devastated but Mum was emotional. We are all homesick.

When we arrived, I smelt an eye-watering smell! I looked at the row upon row of tents and there is a putrid smell about everything (it probably came from the sewers). The tents are in cramped conditions and you have to walk six miles to get food and drink. I was hungry but I got used to it – now I feel safe.

Every day we go and get our food for the whole day and then I go and play. I like playing ball the best. My hopes for the future are that I get to see you again, to be safe, to go back to our home country and to live peacefully. There are lots of children like me and we play lots of games together. We wish you could come and join in.

I hope I see you soon.
Lots of love from Peter xxx

Peter
