Tower and Town, December 2022(view the full edition)      Description of BirdmanYear 4 children have been engaged by their fiction book, Why the Whales Came by Michael Morpurgo, to create descriptions of one of the main characters, Birdman. They were so inspired by the whales in the story that they wrote some non-fiction writing about why they sing. The Birdman was a stooped, old figure with a crow black Sou'wester which he wore on his head. He had a jet black cape which was covered in marks from the flock of screaming seagulls that followed him everywhere. A kittiwake, which sat on his shoulder like a parrot, made him look like a pirate. That was because he was once part of Black Beard's crew and was marooned in Rushy Bay many years ago. The Birdman spoke in a monotone and only talked to himself or to his animals. He had wrinkles that were all over his bone-white, rough skin that were caused by the salt and sea air. His breath was like blood and he wore a bumpy, black eye patch over his left eye. Some said he was the Devil himself or weird or even mad. The people of the island said that if you were touched by the Birdman you would end up cursed, just like him... Harry Reader *Yr 4) |
